What is a Tele-Class?

[ Hint: Think "dynamic, efficient, thorough learning!" ]

  • Tele-classes take place via bridgeline (conference call) from any regular phone, anywhere. (Check the time zone!--we are in USA Eastern Time)

  • You do not need a computer during the tele-class. This is not an e-course or webinar.

  • Long distance charges for the call are at your usual rate according to your carrier. Most carriers now offer a one-price monthly rate that allows you to call anywhere, anytime, as frequently as you want.

  • There is no additonal charge for your use of the conference line.

  • You call in to a designated long-distance number and, following a simple protocol to identify yourself when you speak, act in every way like students in a classroom. By the second class, you will recognize everyone's voice and no longer need to identify yourself.

  • Though many people feel reluctant before trying their first tele-class, everyone who has participated in our tele-class sessions is surprised by how natural and easy it is to participate fully.

  • Classes always include a brief check-in time using a "writing report" form, a presentation by the instructor, a thorough review of a lifestory you have sent to everyone via e-mail attachment, a question and discussion period, wrap-up time, and an assignment.

  • It's easy to connect:
  • Use a regular phone (not a cell phone). VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) such as SKYPE does not work well.
  • Temporarily disconnect call waiting and incoming fax options.
  • Choose a quiet location where you can concentrate, take notes, and be free of household distractions.
  • Follow the simple protocol to identify yourself as you speak.
  • Photos, contact information, and brief "about me" statements will appear on a protected webpage for classmates to view. In this way, you get to know each other well.
  • Before every session, you e-mail your story via attachment to your classmates. They download the story, read it thoroughly, and prepare notes for the tele-class critique. At the tele-class, you receive an in-depth critique along with suggestions for reworking the piece -- if necessary.
