This workshop is designed for those who feel they have a personal or family story to tell but have as yet written little of it. No prior writing experience is required to benefit from this session. Those who have experience with other styles of writing (technical, business or academic) will also find that this thorough grounding in the Turning Memories® lifestory writing method will provide the tools and the proven techniques for continuing a memoir project with confidence.
The workshop will focus on the essentials, from creating a writing plan via the MemoryList recall exercise to developing a storyline to considering publication options.
Participants will write brief (3-5 page) stories and will complete the week with 3-5 rough drafts and one or two reworked, if not polished, stories, as well as a working MemoryList in progress.
A fundamental component of the Turning Memories® method is its integrated process of group editing in a supportive and respectful atmosphere. Participants will learn techniques to edit and rework their own stories beyond the workshop week. They will work with fellow workshoppers to identify and creatively manipulate the fundamental elements of a well-written lifestory. Expect to write a lot during this week-long workshop!
This is the workshop that Affiliate and Associate teachers lead in their communities and attending it is a requirement to become a Certified Lifewriting Instructor (CLI). Participating as a student and witnessing the development in themselves and in other students as writers is a powerful stimulant to teachers in training.
Denis Ledoux is available for private consultation at no extra charge during the workshop week.

![]() The workshop emphasizes writing with the "big idea" in mind--shaping and pacing the sequence of stories, paying special attention to choice of narrator and point of view, keeping story time consistent, minimizing author intrusions. In addition, we review such fundamental story elements as voice, tone, symbolism, and imagery. Other literary techniques are discussed as they come up in the context of our daily Turning Memories® group editing and discussion process. Ample writing time will dominate this week-long session. Come expecting to write! Writers in this workshop often achieve a new understanding and clarity about lingering problems and experience a deep new sense of vision and direction for their work. Frequently, participants recognize familiar blocks in another's manuscript and find the gentle probing of our group editing process can clear the way to move ahead with their own challenges. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptop computers and will share their writing with each other and the instructor, Denis Ledoux. Denis is available for private consultation and coaching at no extra charge during the workshop week.
