Is Soleil Press a publisher?
Soleil Press does not purchase manuscripts. We publish our own titles which are how-to books about memoir writing and manuals for memoir writing teachers.
Books we design for clients are self-published under the author/client's imprint ("Maple Leaf Editions", for instance--a name chosen by a recent client) as a "division" of Soleil Press. The client, not Soleil, is the publisher.
Soleil provides the technical expertise and services authors need to turn their manuscripts into professional, independently-published books.
What's the difference between Soleil Lifestory Network and Soleil Press?
Soleil Lifestory Network is our umbrella name for a number of memoir-related programs, products and services.
Our Book Design and Production team offers Publication Services to people who choose to publish their own books but want expert help to produce a professional-looking book.

Can't a printer do this work?
Printers provide the very technical and specific portion of your book's production work that turns electronic files into a printed book. They are not, however, specialists in book design or attuned to the finer points of book marketing which should dictate certain choices you must make about the look of your book.
Asking a printer to design your book can be a bit like asking a lawyer who to leave your estate to. He may know the technical language to put your choices into effect, but you probably don't want him to choose your heir!
Our job is to be the expert in the middle who can make sure you have considered all the options and decided on each element before the project goes to press. We translate your choices into the language the printer needs to produce the book you dream of.
--How does it work?
We act as a general contractor for your book production project.
1. First, we consult with you and offer suggestions as you go through the process of making the necessary choices about the design and production of your book.
2. Then, we provide estimates:
The Pre-Press Estimate covers all the design and preparation work you ask us to do to prepare technically perfect electronic files for the printer based on your specifications.
The Printing and Binding Estimate covers the work done by the printer to turn those files into your finished book.
If you are selling your book and want us to handle all or part of your publicity and marketing , we will work with you to establish a Marketing Plan and will provide an estimate of the cost of services you ask us to execute.
3. We will establish a timeline and project schedule and set a publication date (often a family event or holiday is your ultimate deadline) and accept your deposit.
--Can I change my mind about details such as fonts, artwork or photos in my book?
Changes can be made at each and every stage to make sure that the finished book is exactly what you want.
However, once work is begun, changes require extra time in our schedule or in the printer's work flow, so late changes will inevitably add to your costs.
The best way to keep your costs down and get the book you want is to be thoroughly prepared ahead of time and to make choices early on.
--Who makes sure there are no mistakes in my book?
1. Typos: Our staff includes more than one eagle-eye for detail. We will proof your manuscript at several stages during the pre-press preparation--and so will you. Long before the files go to the printer, you will receive--and approve--a proof that shows each page as it will appear in the printed book. We always require you to sign off on the proof before it goes on to the next stage.
2. Factual errors: Unless you hire us to cross-check your names, dates, and facts, we will not verify your facts and dates. We will not take responsibility for information contained in your book. Often, as we proofread we catch errors or anachronisms and will call them to your attention. The accuracy of all claims, however, is the author's responsibility.
3. Slander: We strongly encourage you to be certain of your claims and to consider the legal implications of making them. Consult a lawyer, word your statements with conscious attention to how they will be read, and choose not to include any statement you cannot document.
A disclaimer will appear on the copyright page of your book; it will state clearly that the author and not Soleil Lifestory Network, Soleil Press nor any member of its staff is responsible for the contents of the work.
--Will my book be copyrighted? Whose property will it be?
Your book will remain your property. It will be copyrighted under US law in your name. You may choose to have us send a galley proof to the Library of Congress. For a fee, the work can be assigned a Library of Congress number. This number is not necessary for the work to be copyright protected, however. It is only necessary that a statement of copyright appear in the printed book.
--Will my book have an ISBN and UPC Bar Code?
International Standard Book Numbers and bar codes (both available through us for a small fee) are industry standards. If you will be marketing your book in a bookstore or through an online bookseller, you need them to both legitimize your book and to make it easy for the bookseller to adopt your title.
If, however, your book is for family publication or will only be sold locally or through organizations such as your local library or church, these are unecessary. Neither the ISBN nor the UPC Bar Code have any bearing on copyright.
