Fred Schwicker Is A Real Writer

Fred Schwicker knew he had a story to tell. He just didn't know how he could tell it. But he found himself stealing away again and again to the shop connected to his house to write down another one of his tales about growing up in the 1930s in a small fishing community on Long Island, New York.

His tales told the story of a time gone by, before suburbia crept its way into the heart of the self-sufficient towns scattered throughout the island. He knew he needed help with spelling and sentence structure, but the hard work of putting everything on paper he wanted to be his alone.

And today he has a published book to show for it.

One day, once he had all his stories down on paper, Fred contacted Soleil Press. What he wanted was help in shaping his stories into a book. Could we help him, he asked, without changing his stories, changing the feel of them that he had worked so hard at?

That's what we do, we told him. That's our work.

Bob Feeman and Chris Madsen, our editors, helped Fred shape his natural storytelling into a "real book," as Fred calls it, and our book production services (Martha Blowen and Sally Lunt) turned his manuscript into a handsome 200-page book with over 50 photographs. He's already given two readings, including one in his hometown of Seaford, New York, and is looking forward to more. His book was published on July 11, 2003.
