About Turning Memories Into Memoirs, A Handbook for Writing Lifestories

It was truly a gift to read Turning Memories Into Memoirs at the very time I was beginning to write about my life. I was refreshingly surprised by its grounding premise that everyone has stories, and that with some tools, anyone who wants to can write. I have recommended our book to all my writing friends. -- Maura Murphy

About the Turning Memories Into Memoirs® Lifewriting Workshop

I"m very pleased that I made the decision to be here. I needed the intensity of the retreat to get me back on course after drifing away from writing these past nine months. Thanks!

As time goes on, I realize how much I learned.
Looking back over my notes and continuing to write helps me to recall the valuable information I got from you, Denis. Thank you again.
The week was incredible... Denis is very talented in many areas, not only in his language skills and teaching, but more-- he pulled much from some of us "turnips"!!
The week in Wells was a tremendous way to get immersed in lifewriting practice. And Denis is such a wonderful teacher/faciltator.

I am encouraging my husband to start taking notes and make his own MemoryLists for his part of our family's story.
Turning Memories Into Memoirs, one might say, was one of several 'seeds' that have made memoir writing become more rewarding for me. Thanks!
About our Leader Training & Certfication Program

I felt you delivered exactly what you wrote about in the Curriculum Manual. The illustrations and examples you used were helpful tools. I'm also taking home more confidence than I had going in.

Earning certification as a Turning Memories Into Memoirs Lifewstory writing workshop leader and coach is a dream come true for me. Your entire program has been inspiring and educational, and quite user-friendly. I know this certifictaion will bring great satisfaction and personal fulfillment, not only to me, but also to those who shoose to work with me. -- Pamela Daugavietis
What appealed to me about your Training Program was the way in which teachers could make extra money. I have always enjoyed writing and try to encourage others to journal and write their life stories. I thought it was smart to have a full "package" to present to them, like you described on your web site, without having to reinvent the wheel!
When I found you on the web and the site had so much interesting information, I had already been looking for and comparing different texts on the subject of memoir writing. So I ordered the text and liked what Denis has written very much.

I think your materials are excellent and so does everyone I have had in my classes. This is just a sideline with me --I am already retired and trying to more fully utilize my various interests. Genealogy and lifewriting are among them.

Got to stay mentally sharp as you get older and engaging with others in such rewarding work helps!
Looking back, I have to say I found the Business Supports Seminar very helpful and complete. I feel I have the info I need to start the business successfully.
In the training workshop I attended, the approach was sound and well-presented. It was full of information I can use every day. I would unhesitatingly recommend the workshop to anyone who is determined to make a successful business out of lifewriting, which I certainly plan to do.
The best things I am taking home with me from this program are the knowledge that this is a do-able business; the connection to others who are also doing this work; specific info related to contacting/negotiating/working with venue directors and lifestory writing audiences.
Being with others who were going to be doing the same activities to get their businesses going was very important to me. The brainstorming function is a tremendous benefit.
I am so excited about the potential of being well-paid for doing meaningful work in a flexible, home-based setting. This is not just 'a job' but work I believe in and believe I can be very good at.
The seminar met and exceeded my expectations!
There is a balance to the (business) plan that acknowledges the importance of all aspects of one's life-- family, leisure, spiritual life, physical health. Very wholistic!
Denis' presentation was excellent. A business plan by an intuitive for intuitives! Organized, thorough and stimulating. The examples he provided were helpful and will continue to be so as I work out the details of my plan and put it into action.
Being at the Institute has given me inspiration and confidence in my ability to follow through with refining and implementing my business plan.
About our Turning Memories ® Tele-Classes

Great motivator! Your tele-class took me much further than I would have been if I had ben on my own! -- Kathy Linquist

I think the tele-classes were great in that they helped us to stay focused on setting up our businesses. I don't think we could have made the progress we have made without this weekly contact. -- Robbie ter Kuile
Your tele-class was really great for me -- someone just beginning in this field. You helped me understand more about business strategy, marketing, contractual pitfalls, etc. In one hour, I feel I learned an enormous amount. While I've read a number of books on starting a business, somehow hearing it from someone experienced in this field made the information and ideas more applicable to my business. Thanks again. --Lori Banks
I would certainly recommend Denis' tele-class to everone, especially those like myself who are just starting out. I also was curious how a tele-class would work -- and it was quite interesting. I thought perhaps people would talk over each other, but that didn't happen. Denis is not only a good teacher, but a superb moderator. Thanks! -- Gwenn Johnson
I was leery at first; the phone didn't sound like a very educational medium. But I was really "jazzed up" by the writing group classes. I don't feel so alone with my "peculiar" ambition to write my parents' lifestories. And the techniques I learned were total Draino on my writing blocks!
Please allow me to tell you how much I am enjoying the class. I love your approach--to start with the psycho--and demographics before writing. It's something I had never done before, but it really makes a difference.
Once I began visualizing my audience and writing a list of their characteristics like you suggested, my entire BUSINESS came into focus. I still need a little help reigning in the scope of my non-fiction book, but now I can see that my brochures and marketing pieces--while still in very rough draft form--are beginning to come together. So very soon I will have quite a tight little focus on my topic and I'll be ready to tell the world!
I had nearly given up the idea of writing anything meaningful, simply because I didn't really know from which angle to tell which story. With the common sense, simple directives you have given us, and the asset of your book I feel that I have someone looking over my shoulder nudging me on the way. The voices of others on our tele-call class come back to me; knowing that others are encountering problems but still write regularly is a boost every time I sit down to write.
The follow-up tele-class has been wonderful. It really got people in gear to set goals and have specific actions to take. It was great reconnecting with everyone after the Institute.
I don't think we would have made the progress we have without the tele-classes after we returned home from the leader training Institute. Knowing we had to report to our group about the goals we had set in the last session made most of us want to have something to report!
When I got home, I quickly found that my 'former' life was ready to take over and dictate how I'd spend my time--you'd think I'd never made the committment and gone to Maine. The tele-classes provided a structure for resisting that settling back in. Also--I was so glad for my classmates when I heard the joy in their voices as each week one of them could announce a venue arranged, an office problem solved or other goals accomplished.

About Editing Services

I want to express my deep appreciation for your thorough and comprehensive editorial comments, and your insight on needed corrections for the manuscript I submitted. Your thorough comments make it obvious that it is important for another person to provide a critical review of a manuscript because, although the authors knows whe he/she wants to say, it is not always expressed in a manner to attract readers. -- Shelbert Smith
