Soleil Book & Manuscript Editing Process
Planning:
We begin with a free consultation, usually by telephone. (Call 207-353-5454 to set up a telephone appointment.) Together we discuss your manuscript and your goals and ambitions for it. We'll talk about appropriate timelines, projected schedule, and ask, who will be your readers? what sort of finished product are you working toward? what problems are you encountering in the creation of your book.
We'll also talk about our Trial Editing--a 2-hour committment that gives us a chance to get acquainted. And we'll tell you about our different plans: you can work with us by the hour or by the month depending on how fast you are ready to move on your manuscript and what deadlines you hve set for completion.
One of our experienced editors, becomes your coach, creative consultant, technical advisor, in short--your editor.
Communication and Correspondence:
You send a duplicate of your manuscript or segment (never the original or only copy).
Your editor responds with notes and suggestions. An annotated manuscript is returned to you so you can consider the changes s/he suggests. We keep a photocopy of the annotated pages in your file drawer just in case they are lost in the mail and also so your editor can refer to his notes when consulting with you.
In an accompanying letter, your editor explains her notes and addresses any larger issues you have posed or that have come up as s/he reads your text.
The Returned Manuscript:
Suggestions for re-working may include changes in organization, style, tone, point of view, unity of voice, grammatical usage, or new approaches to shaping, creating effective transitions between sections, expanding or tightening up your manuscript.
Your editor may suggest that you read, or journal, or work on specific techniques, not just change this word for that one.
Your editior may offer specific suggestions for rewriting a paragraph, and/or s/he may discuss broader issues of character development or setting.
Clear Explanation & Discussion of Notes:
When you receive the returned manuscript, you may want to consult with your editor about specific or general notes. Telephone for an appointment at your convenience.
Often, a second revision brings you to a new level of reshaping your manuscript.
Your editor may recommend changes on text you've already changed!
That's because as you re-work a particular section, earlier or later bits need to incorporate those changes, too.
Setting the pace of the project and determining when it's "done" is up to you--with encouragement and support from your editor, whose job is always to push a little! That's because the editor's job includes holding you to the goals you've articulated, or helping you to revise them as you work.
If you've been working on your own, you'll be amazed at how this accountability and encouragement will effect your output.
The First Step: Are we "a fit?"-- 2-hour Trial Editing
We find it works well to begin with an exploratory 2-hour committment.
It works like this:
You send a sample portion of your manuscript (20 to 30 double-spaced, typed pages) and a check (we also accept credit cards) for two hours of work.
Your editor reads and responds exactly as s/he will if you contract with us for your full project.
The charge for this introductory editing is $160.
This trial run allows you to 'check us out,' and for us to assess both your manuscript and our work-together compatibility.
After all, we want to be sure we give you the help you need to write the very best manuscript you can.
